Open Studio Nights: Emerging Artists Showcase

Explore and mingle with the talented artists that work and create at Chattanooga WorkSpace. Come experience a glimpse into a working artist studio and engage with art enthusiasts in our community and watch demonstrations across a variety of mediums.

Ooltewah High Art. students from Ooltewah High School will present their senior art exhibition in the WorkSpace Gallery. The exhibition is under the direction of IB art instructor Andrea McGuirt.

Bethany Lauren Wilson with Bela Begonias is the featured artist in the ArtSpace Gallery on the 2nd floor.

Guest artists will fill the hallways and commons areas on each floor.

Delicious hors d’oeuvres will be served by Dish T’ Pass. This is a family friendly event. Admission and parking are free.


 

Grassroots Organizing for Our Public Schools

UnifiEd is a grassroots organizing and advocacy organization, and our trainers will guide you in the basic principles of community organizing, arm you with information and tools to get active in your neighborhood and networks, and impact policy change for our kids and schools!

Goals of this workshop:

– Get the big picture of the history of education in Hamilton County
– Understand concepts of community organizing and how it affects policy change
– Learn what UnifiEd is and how you can get involved
– Understand the APEX Project (Action Plan for Educational eXcellence) and community members’ roles in developing and implementing it
– Better understand and share your own story about education
– Learn and practice organizing strategies to learn how to (1) Hear story of community member, (2) Support other people to understand, and (3) Recruit other community members for involvement

Watercolor Sketching: A Half-Day Workshop

This half-day workshop will cover all basic concepts of sketching, gesture drawing, pen and ink, and watercolor. The class will provide students the foundation needed to establish a daily sketching practice. Students will head outside to work on how to capture buildings and people, build a loose sketch, add ink and finish with watercolor.

Supplies: All students will be supplied with a watercolor travel set, water brush pen, fine line Sharpie and a small watercolor sketchbook to keep. Snacks are provided, and participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch.


 

Historical Perspectives on Hamilton County Public Schools

How did public schools in Hamilton County get where they are today? The system that educates 45,000 children in our community is the product of decades of social and legal influences and decisions by policy makers. It’s vital to understand where we’ve been and where we are today in order to shape a brighter tomorrow.

A few topics covered:

Brown v. Board of Education comes to Hamilton County
Key lawsuits around desegregating local schools
Removal of the desegregation ordinance
White flight and protests
Merger between city and county school systems
Current state of school zoning, classroom discipline, graduation rates, course offerings, and more
What’s working around the nation
What’s next for our community and schools?

Join us to discuss, learn, grow, share, and organize to affect grassroots change for public education in our community!

Mindful Eating

Join local dietitian Courtney Phifer, MS, RD, LDN, owner of Nourish Nutrition Counseling, as she takes us through the practice of mindful eating. Mindful eating is eating with awareness and using your senses to fully experience the food. With practice, it can help us avoid overeating and help us learn our natural body cues. The class will include an intro to mindfulness, eating in the moment, and hunger/satiety.


 

Planting for Pollinators

Introduction to Weaving

Learn the basics of weaving on a simple frame loom. Beginner weaves and stitches will be covered, and you will begin your very own woven wall hanging to take home. Love fiber art? This class is for you. Each participant will be supplied with a small tapestry loom (to keep), yarns, and all the necessary tools to create one wall hanging, which we may finish during the 3 hour workshop. Instant Pot 101 will calm your nerves with a quick rundown of the parts of your Instant Pot, review of basic Instant Pot techniques, and three recipe demos (audience participation encouraged!). We’ll make creamy chicken soup then we’ll make some rice to add to it, and we’ll finish off our meal with Instant Pot apple crisp.
