Home Buyer Happy Hour

Do you think you’re ready to buy a home but don’t know where to start?

In this course, we will cover all the things you’ll encounter as a first-time home buyer: working with a realtor, mortgages, finding a lender, what to expect from closing costs, how much money to have set aside for emergencies, paying bills, and more. Come with any questions you may have and our experts will help you along the process.

Adult beverages will be served. This class is presented and sponsored by realtor Marie King and lender Brian Kniegge. There is no cost to attend this class.

Fundamental Series – Soldering Jewelry with a Torch – 4 night session

Tuesday | 4 Night Series – October 2nd, 9th, 16th, & 23rd | 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm | $220 includes all 4 nights

Our Fundamental sessions are for those who want to explore and learn more intensive jewelry making skillsets beyond our Make & Take workshops.

NOTE: Sessions are 4 nights total, 2 hours each Tuesday.

This series will focus on the basics of soldering metals together using an acetylene and/or a butane torch to create jewelry. Over time, this month long series will expand to include both beginning and more advanced students as need develops We’ll start with safety, tools and setup, then cover various types of soldering techniques and troubleshooting. Materials used will include sterling silver and copper.

No experience necessary and basic MATERIALS ARE INCLUDED in the cost of the class. (Additional silver can be purchased from instructor) Option available to add an additional hour of studio time from 8-9pm for $10.

Working Through Stress With Writing

Tuesday | October 9th | 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm | $15

We are all stressed. The world is chaotic, busy, full of screens and cellphones, demands from children, aging parents, and close friends coming apart at the seams. And the endless march of lessons and practices–violin, piano, soccer, softball, yoga, and the recurring shame of that unused gym membership. And money troubles. And sickness.

In all this swirl of activity and uncertain emotions and circumstances, stress can overwhelm us. And can become anxiety. Can become sadness. Depression. Isolation.

A creative outlet, like Writing, can help you reduce your stress and put your life into focus. In this class we will focus on self-expression. There are no writing “rights” or “wrongs.” We will not focus on correct grammar or spelling. Instead, you will be encouraged to honor yourself, just as you are, and to give yourself caring and compassion.

This is a no-pressure class. If you want to share your writing, you can. If you want to keep your writing private, that’s okay. There will be no criticism of your work. You are free to just be yourself.

We will provide pen and paper. Please bring your own notebooks, tablet or laptop if you prefer.

Creative Journaling 101

Unlock your planner potential! By now you have probably heard about the Bullet Journal craze that has taken over Pinterest and Instagram since its inception back in 2014. Based on personal experience with creative journaling over the past 3 years, teacher Martha Arrington share pages from her own journals, discuss pros and cons, tips and tricks, and materials and supplies. In this class, you’ll learn how to set up the 6 most important pages in your journal so you can walk out of class ready to begin a more productive and organized life.

Supplies: All supplies included. Each participant will receive a 30 page journal and Sakura Pigma Micron pen.

Beginner Macrame: Wall Hanging

Learn to make your own elegant macrame wall hanging! This is a beginner macrame class and no prior experience is needed.

In this class, you will:

Learn how to start your own wall hanging, including an overview of the materials.
Learn how to make a variety of knots.
Leave with a beautiful piece of finished wall art and the know-how to design and create more pieces on your own.

Goals: Finish 2018 Strong

We are in the home stretch of this extraordinary year of 2018 and the question that is begging for our attention is, “Where are you at in your creative process to do what you declared to accomplish this year?”. If you want to have the success of achieving the goals you set for this year, it is the precise moment to pause and take an inventory of where you are in the process and what action steps are essential to propel you to the finish line.

In this master class, we will do an inquiry of where we are in our creative process of our goals. You will receive tools and experiential exercises that will support you in going the rest of the distance toward your desire and creating a plan for the realization of it in your life. This workshop will guide you to:

Assess where you are now in your creative process of your goal.
Get clear about what it is you want? We will tools of clarity to connect to our vision of our end result.
Define an accountable action plan using the “How” and the “By when” measure of your goal.
Discover the 5 main reasons we fail at achieving our best desires and the tools we can use to overcome our personal blocks.
Put into action your goals by using a mind mapping tool to define with clarity an action step plan

Make & Take: Halloween Branch Weaving

Sunday | October 14th | 11:00 am – 12:30 pm | $30

It’s my FAVORITE time of year, and who likes to weave as much as me? SPIDERS. Branch weaving is fun for beginners and more experienced alike. In this project workshop you will make your own piece that you can gift or use in your own Halloween decor. You can make it with or without the spider.

Cost of Class includes: Fibers, branch, decorative spider.

Basic weaving stitches will be taught, and you can adjust this project to your own skill level. Take home your weaving to set on a mantle or hang from a wall or door.

Intermediate Art Weaving: Awesome Textures

Sunday | October 14th | 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm | $45

Take your tapestry weaving to the next level with texture. We will add several new techniques to your repetoire to create interest in your fiber art. We will also explore a variety of fibers including wool roving, felted yarn, silk fabric, and cotton rope. All yarns and fibers included, but you will need to bring your own small frame loom. Email me if you do not have a loom and either wish me to purchase one for you or simply send you in the right direction to get one.

Since we will be building on basic weaving techniques, I recommend you have had previous tapestry weaving experience (tabby, rya fringe, and soumak) to get the most out of this class.

Beginner Kite Making

Kite making is fun and easy! In this beginner class, you will learn to make basic diamond kite. We will then drive to Sculpture Fields to test our creations.

Introduction to Zentangle

With Zentangle, anyone can create beautiful images from repetitive patterns—no artistic ability or training required! This method is easy to learn and easy to do. Zentangle provides a fun and lighthearted way to relax while intentionally facilitating a shift in focus and perspective.

Understanding Doulas

Saturday | September 22nd | 11:30 am – 12:30 pm | $15

Doulas help with birth and postpartum needs of families. According to the DONA International, doulas are trained professionals who provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.

This class will be a question and answer style conversation for anyone who is curious about learning more about the birthing process. Whether you’re pregnant, thinking about pregnancy, or are just interested in the process of bringing life into the world, this class is for you.

Intro to Weaving: September

Saturday | September 22nd | 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm | $55

Learn the basics of weaving on a simple frame loom. Beginner weaves and stitches will be covered, and you will create your very own woven wall hanging to take home. Love fiber art? This class is for you. Each participant will be supplied with a small tapestry loom (to keep), yarns, and all the necessary tools to create one wall hanging, which we may finish during the 3 hour workshop. Light snacks provided.
We’ll be saying goodbye to summer with a beachy (blues) or bohemian (pinks/neutrals) theme or for the final project.

Space is limited. 1 ticket=1 person

Embroidery 101

Monday | September 4th | 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

This course is designed to teach participants how to make their own basic embroidery hoop designs and learn four popular threading techniques. This will include an introduction to embroidery and all the possibilities!

Examples will be provided and demonstrated in the threading styles of running stitch, back stitch, satin stitch, and chain stitch. This class is hands-on with all materials included and ready to go. Participants will learn stitching styles, practice stitching, and leave with their first hoop creation and an understanding of how to go forward and embroider.

Jewelry Intensive: Perfect Rivets & a few Other Cold Connections

Tuesday | September 25th | 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm | $75

In this 3 hour Jewelry Intensive we’ll explore those pesky rivets that never seem to turn out right and utiilize a method that yields a great rivet everytime. Plus we’ll discuss and try out a few other cold connection options . At the end of class, you’ll leave with at least 1 or 2 completed pieces and your own set of riveting tools and template.

All materials are provided in the cost of class.

Basic Nutrition for the Healthy Pet

Wednesday | September 26th | 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm | $15

Do you feel like your pet is healthy?

Learn what your pet’s real nutritional requirements are and how their current diet compares. Get a veterinary overview of your pet’s biology to better understand their nutritional needs based on science and physiology so you can help them live a healthy, happy, holistic life. There will be time for questions and answers at the end of the session.

The teacher is donating the proceeds of the class to ChattaNeuter, a low cost spay/neuter clinic in Chattanooga.


August 2018 Classes & Events

2nd Annual – Artists in the Wild – Open Studio Nights

Friday | August 3rd | 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm | FREE EVENT

Join us on Friday, August 3rd for our 2nd annual Artists in the Wild Open Studio Nights, from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm. Our WorkSpace artists have selected an animal from the Chattanooga Zoo and created a piece of art inspired by the work the zoo animal itself painted. The Zoo will also be there with several of their little animal ambassadors for you to meet in person!

Each of the zoo animal inspired pieces will be in a silent auction beginning July 31st and will continue through the end of Open Studio Nights, August 3rd. 50% of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Chattanooga Zoo.

It’s a cultural experience perfect for a date night, family night out or for anyone interested in meeting other artists.
** This is a free ~ family ~ friendly event **

Our own, Rick Rushing III will be playing music in the WorkSpace Gallery and AIM Center, Inc. will be the featured artists in the ArtSpace Gallery on the 2nd floor.

David Barlew Jr will have a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony celebrating the opening of his new space.

Milk and Honey will be handing out gelato and Dish T’Pass Catering Co.will be catering with a nacho bar for the evening. We are also excited to have Alex Nelson with Spun Jewelry & Lisa A Bohnwagner as guest artists during the event.

WorkSpace artists will have their studios open for everyone to explore, purchase local art and see their newest works. Come meet the local artists and enjoy the refreshing spirit of this unique creative space. Visit each floor to see a new theme, exhibit or meet someone new.

Chattanooga has been chosen as a pilot city for a new EmcArts program. Chattanooga WorkSpace & The Chattery have teamed up as the host organizations who will help facilitate and organize the workshop series in partnership with EmcArts.

EmcArts will choose 10 artists to participate in the program through an application process. The application deadline is July 9. Each artist who participates in the program will receive a $250 stipend for each day (total $1,000).
The workshops will be held August 11 & 12 and September 29 & 30

Funding for the program is provided by Kresge Foundation and Lyndhurst Foundation. 

July 2018 Classes & Events

We will not be hosting a July Open Studio Nights. We will pick back up August 3rd for our 2nd annual Artists in the Wild, Open Studio Nights.
Our artists have teamed up with the Chattanooga Zoo & with the help of several zoo animals artists are creating one of a kind pieces you will have a chance to bid on during our silent auction. Plus 50% of the proceeds will go back to the zoo! There is a good chance you will get to meet several of the zoo’s animal ambassadors during the event here at Chattanooga WorkSpace.
We are also very happy to announce Milk and Honey as one of our food sponsors for the evening. Ok – so who doesn’t like gelato, animals, & art???

Introduction to Calligraphy

Thursday | July 5th | 6:pm – 7:30 pm | $25

This class is an introduction to the basics of calligraphy. From these basics in class, students can pursue developing the skills of a traditional style of calligraphy or can adapt them into a more contemporary style. Good penmanship is not required – only a desire to enjoy oneself and to learn some of the basics of the art of calligraphy.

Supplies: We will provide all supplies including: paper for practice and calligraphy pens for you to take home. Students will need to bring a small quotation or an inspirational phrase to use for your project.


Beginner Handlettering

Monday | July 9th | 6:pm – 8:15pm | $45

Love all the cute lettering pieces you see in home décor elements? Want to learn to make your own pieces to decorate your house, give as gifts, or gussy up your snail mail?

Also referred to as “modern calligraphy,” hand-lettering or brush lettering is a popular form of writing seen around DIY projects on Pinterest and Instagram. It has a more whimsical, loose feel than standard fountain pen calligraphy and is popularly used for wedding invitations, thank-you cards, place-settings, etc.

Join us for a workshop to learn the basics of hand lettering and more. We will move from manipulating the pens to the basic brush lettering script alphabet. The class will also address letter connections and basic flourishes. Plus, you will learn some tricks of the trade to practice smarter, not harder!

Supplies: All supplies are included. Each participant will receive three pens and tracing paper to keep practicing at home.

No Pressure: Instant Pot 101

Haven’t quite figured out that Instant Pot you got from a family member? Mary Haymaker from Chattavore will help you decipher the settings and figure out how to get a meal on the table using today’s trendiest kitchen appliance. We’ll cook a delicious meal: chicken tacos, black beans, and rice, with flan for dessert. Bring your questions about the Instant Pot and if Mary doesn’t know the answer she’ll find it for you!

Please note: This class is demonstration style. You do not need to own or bring an Instant Pot with you.

Watercolor Sketching: A Half-Day Workshop

Saturday | July 14th | 9:am – 1:pm | $65

This half-day workshop will cover all basic concepts of sketching, gesture drawing, pen and ink, and watercolor. The class will provide students the foundation needed to establish a daily sketching practice. Students will head outside to work on how to capture buildings and people, build a loose sketch, add ink and finish with watercolor.

All students will be supplied with a watercolor travel set, water brush pen, fine line Sharpie and a small watercolor sketchbook to keep. Snacks are provided, and participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch.

DIY Decor: Beginner’s Macrame

We’re well into a new season and there’s nothing better to get you into the mood than refreshing some of your home decor. Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, West Elm and many other home decor sites showcase these beautiful macrame wall hangings, but why buy it when you can DIY it?!

Come and craft your own chic work of art. You will be amazed at how quickly you can DIY something that could easily have cost you more than $100!

Wines from the Wild: Making Fruit Wines

Tuesday | July 17th | 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm | $23

Summertime means fresh berries, and berries mean wine! Join Fermdamental’s Danielle Shelton as she demonstrates how to make wine with berries. The participants will learn the fundamentals of making wild wines and will leave with a few recipes they can try at home. All participants must be 21 or older, as sampling homemade wines will be part of the fun! This is a demonstration-style class.

Leveraging Social Media for Business

With so many social media platforms out there, how do you know which one is the RIGHT one for YOUR business to be on? Answering that question and then what to post on each can be daunting. Well not anymore!

During this class presented by D. Channing Muller of DCM Communications, you will learn:

why people visit each social media platform,
the best types of photos and content to post on each platform, and
how to generate leads with your social media that feed your sales funnel

AND, you’ll learn how to do it ALL without:

fretting over what to say,
struggling to find the right photo for the right platform, or
wasting time or money on the platforms that won’t work for YOUR business or upcoming event

No more guessing what to post on Instagram vs. Facebook vs. Twitter. This class will break down EXACTLY the type of content to post each to make your business a success on social media.

Finding Your Zen in a Corporate World

Sitting at a desk all day handling stressor after stressor can begin to negatively affect you physically, mentally and emotionally. In this class, you will learn some basic concepts of breath and gentle motion that will allow you to stop stress in its tracks. After discussing stress and its effects on you and your workplace, we will practice techniques to calm your mind, relieve your body and boost your mood.

Jewelry Making: Leather Cuff

Saturday | July 21st | 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm | $27

This class is a beginner class that teaches you how to embellish your leather cuff with paint, rivets, cording, and much more! We will start with some basic techniques that will help you to then move to a more detailed design in the near future. At the end of the class, you’ll have a unique, decorated cuff all for you!

DIY Graphic Design Platforms

Saturday | July 28th | 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm | $15

How do you determine the extent of your company’s promotional or creative needs, and what will fit that need with the least amount of hassle and money? Learn what Gimp, Inkscape, Canva and Adobe offer, and how much each program costs. In this class, you will get a basic introduction to each program, which will help you find the best program for you…and your wallet.

Please bring your laptop.
