Mindy Kelly

I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and moved to Chattanooga in 2006.  I love my adopted hometown and find inspiration all around.  As a self taught artist, I am constantly exploring new ways of working with materials to create work that speaks to my past and present.  I tend to work intuitively in many layers of paint and paper.  I want people to find little hidden gems in my work that may amuse or surprise them! I mostly work in acrylic and mixed media using my collection of vintage books, magazines, and odd and ends in my creations.  I choose to work in a series to try to explore a single theme to its natural conclusion.  My current body of work is titled Nostalgic Beauty and was originally sparked by my large collection of vintage hair styling magazines. Being in the Beauty industry for almost 20 years you see the absurdity and the advertising of “perfect” to women as a never ending song that is always playing in the background.  Examining my relationship to this beauty propaganda and my part in it thru a whimsical approach and the bright colors of youth is at the heart of this series.  Work is created with acrylic paint, beauty imagery,  and found and created papers. My art is also inspired by the amazing women in my life, an occasionally offbeat sense of humor, and the exploration of love and self.  I love this artistic adventure!
